Coffee is not one of the prohibited items in the official 75 HARD rules.
But that does not give every coffee drink a free pass.
The rule is simple: the drink must fit the diet you committed to before Day 1. Coffee also sits completely outside the gallon-water requirement. Drink it if it fits. Do not count it as water.
The clean answer: Black coffee is usually the easiest call. Milk, cream, sugar, syrups, protein powder, and other additions only work if they fit your declared diet. None of it counts toward the gallon.
Coffee Does Not Count Toward the Gallon
The official 75 HARD FAQ says the gallon must be plain, unflavored, non-carbonated water. Drinks with additives are allowed separately when they fit your diet, but they do not count toward that water total.
Coffee is separate.
Do not subtract a 16-ounce coffee from the gallon. Do not call an Americano “mostly water” and negotiate the remaining ounces. Finish the plain-water requirement as written.
Your Diet Decides What Goes Into the Coffee
75 HARD requires you to choose a structured diet aligned with a physical goal. It does not prescribe one universal meal plan.
That means the coffee question becomes a diet question.
- Black coffee: generally compatible unless your own diet excludes caffeine or coffee.
- Milk or cream: allowed only when the type and amount fit your diet.
- Sugar or flavored syrup: allowed only if your written diet permits it. A “small amount” is not a rule.
- Protein coffee or supplements: may fit your diet, but the drink still does not count toward the gallon.
Decide the boundary before you begin. “I will know a cheat drink when I see one” is how the standard starts moving halfway through the program.
Caffeine Is Not a Separate 75 HARD Rule
The official task list does not include a caffeine ban. You do not earn extra credit for inventing one on Day 19, and you do not fail merely because a drink contains caffeine.
If eliminating caffeine is part of the diet or personal standard you chose, then keep that standard. If it is not, do not rewrite the program after you start.
More rules do not automatically create more discipline. Clear rules executed without negotiation do.
Do Not Confuse 75 HARD With Cue 75 Classic
75 HARD is the trademarked program created by Andy Frisella. Cue is not affiliated with it.
Cue offers a separate in-app program called 75 Classic. It uses clearly defined daily tasks—including following your diet, avoiding alcohol, and drinking one gallon of water—and lets you track the full contract in Cue.
The same practical rule works there: coffee can exist beside the challenge when it fits your chosen diet. It does not replace the water task.
Set the Coffee Rule Before Day 1
Write one sentence:
“During this challenge, my coffee can include ______, up to ______, and it never counts toward my water.”
Now the morning decision is closed.
No courtroom. No technicality. Make the drink, follow the rule, finish the water.
